St. Martin’s, has been quietly working away for decades. The St. Martin’s Welfare Group (previously the Edith Benson Sewing and Knitting Group) has been going since the end of World War II- that is perseverance! Currently they are assisting St. Thomas’ Home for Children, in Sydenham. The Home was founded in 1959 and provides a home for 62 children from 2 to 10 years of age. Many of these children are abandoned and there are an increasing number of AIDS orphans.
This small project provides 2 pairs of summer pyjamas and 2 pairs of winter pyjamas for each child, as well as a jersey and shorts each, annually, plus a few other items of clothing.
The team meet on the first Thursday of the month in the church hall. Any help, whether donations of materials or wool, or the giving of your time, would be greatly appreciated!
Natal Nomads were proud to hand over a Toyota Tazz to assist St Thomas Home in their efforts to provide assistance in their endeavours to reach those children in need.
The CARE Centre is a support group for HIV positive people, meeting on Mondays at Greenwood Park and on Wednesdays at Etembeni in Inanda. Run by a group of dedicated church people (Ann Taylor and Ruth White from St Martins), they give counselling support, collect food parcels and hand them out to the very needy (supporting 50-60 families a month), and they enable people to get various government grants, give talks on lifestyle, cooking demonstrations and other basic support.
Every Wednesday hundreds of women who have been raped or whose children have been raped, gather under a tree near Amanzimtoti to seek counselling and care. It is called the Tree Clinic and is run by Operation Bobbi Bear.
